Sports Unity – Promoting Mental Wellness Through Sport

About Us

Sports Unity is a ground-breaking initiative aimed at uniting sports athletes and organisations in Malta under one collective mission: promoting mental well-being through the power of sports. Here, we believe in the transformative impact of sports on mental health and champion the idea that a healthy mind is as important as a healthy body.

Objectives

  • Raise Awareness 🧠 – Increase awareness among athletes, clubs and communities about mental wellness and reduce stigma.
  • Empower Individuals 💪 – Provide tools and resources to help young people and athletes develop resilience and well-being, and how they can address mental health issues.
  • Build Partnerships 🤝 – Collaborate with organisations to deliver educational talks, seminars, and mental health initiatives.
  • Encourage Inclusion 🌍 – Ensure that sporting opportunities are accessible to all, regardless of background, age, or ability.
  • Create Impact 🎯 – Combine fundraising and educational activities to generate tangible social benefits for communities.

Why Mental Health Matters

Mental health is a cornerstone of overall well-being, affecting how we think, feel and interact with others. In Malta, the importance of mental health has gained increasing recognition in recent years, as research and local experiences highlight the impact of stress, anxiety, depression, and social pressures on individuals and communities. A healthy mind is essential not only for personal fulfilment but also for productivity, strong relationships, and resilience in the face of challenges.

from local studies show rising rates of mental health challenges across age groups, including young athletes who face performance pressures, students facing academic demands, and professionals balancing work and family life.

Promoting mental well-being through sport is particularly relevant in Malta, where sports clubs and community activities play a central role in social life. Participation in physical activity has been proven to improve mood, reduce stress and boost self-esteem. By fostering environments where mental health is openly discussed and supported, together we can build stronger communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and feel safe.

How we work

Through workshops, talks, campaigns and collaborative activities, Sports Unity links sport with mental health education. Partnerships with sports clubs, sports organisations, sport federations and associations as well as community-based organisations create supportive environments where mental wellness is addressed both on and off the field.

Anti-Bullying Week 2025

This Anti-Bullying Week 2025, Ħamrun Ħanin and bBrave brought together Hamrun Spartans Football Club, Floriana FC, the Malta Football Association – 1900 and the MFRA during the Jubilee Cup match between Ħamrun and Floriana to share an important message: bullying has no place in our game or our community.
The theme this year, “Power for Good”, reminds us that every one of us has the power to make a difference — to lift others up 🤝, to stand by our teammates, and to use our strength and voice for kindness 💛.
Let’s play with respect. Let’s live with respect 🌟.

PREVENT-CRC Project Gains Momentum: Key Milestones Achieved

The PREVENT-CRC project continues to make strong progress toward understanding and preventing colorectal cancer through early detection of biological changes linked to intestinal health and metabolism.

Our team has reached first phase exciting milestones:
🔬 First Dataset Analysed
The initial dataset focusing on intestinal inflammation has been successfully analysed, providing valuable insights into early immune and metabolic alterations that may precede disease development.

🧬 Algorithm for Methylation Capacity Presented in Brussels
On 24th October, our novel algorithm assessing methylation capacity was presented at an international meeting, ELMO conference in Brussels. The presentation, “Gut Dysbiosis as a Determinant of One-Carbon Metabolism Deficiency”, highlighted how disruptions in gut microbiota can influence crucial biochemical pathways linked to colorectal cancer risk.

💉 Immune Activation Testing Ready for Community Studies
Our immune activation testing platform has been fully optimised and is now ready for deployment in the mobile research unit. This will enable on-site investigations into sub-optimal health conditions directly within the community, a vital step in translating research into public health impact.

🧪 PhD Research and Metabolomics Program Underway
A dedicated PhD student has embarked on the metabolomics component of the project, integrating biochemical profiling with microbiome and methylation data. All discussions with service providers have been concluded, paving the way to launch the community research phase.

The PREVENT-CRC team is proud to see the collaboration between researchers, clinicians, and community partners gaining pace. Together, we are building the scientific foundation for preventing colorectal cancer before it starts.

Inaugural Sports Unity Gala Night brings together football community for cancer research

Sports Unity kicked off its first major fundraiser for cancer research with a memorable gala evening drawing widespread support from Malta’s football community.

This inaugural event brought together representatives from eight clubs across the Malta Premier League and Challenge League, showcasing a collective commitment to making a positive impact on society.

The initiative, a project of Ħamrun Ħanin, also received backing from the Malta Football Association (MFA), the Malta Premier League (MPL) and the Malta Football Players Association (MFPA).

Sports Unity’s primary goal is to harness the power of sport to make a meaningful difference in society. The first project focuses on supporting cancer research, in collaboration with RIDT, University of Malta’s research fund. This project highlights the commitment to channel the influence of sports towards causes that benefit the broader community.

During the event, held at Giardini Lambrosa in Rabat, participants had the exclusive opportunity to see the brand-new Mobile Laboratory of the Cancer Research and Innovation Hub Malta.

This state-of-the-art facility, which is being supported by Parliamentary Secretary for Research and Innovation, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, will play a crucial role in advancing the cancer research project that lies at the core of the Sports Unity initiative.

Speaking at the event, Ian Debattista, Chairman of Ħamrun Ħanin, emphasised the unifying power of sports.

“Sport has a unique role in bringing people together across cultures, backgrounds and communities. It is a powerful platform for unity and collaboration towards common goals” he said.

“Our objective is to extend the success of this  social initiative by bringing all football clubs and eventually other sports towards a common objective, that of contributing to the community around us”.

In a statement, Sports Unity thanked Finestral Malta, the main sponsor for this event, as well as all other contributors to this memorable evening, including Elia Caterers, SoundCo, Alberta Group, Salesian Press and Henry Zammit Cordina.
